Porn Star or Felon …which do you want in your station??

Back in Feb. 2012, I ran a series of posts related to convicted felons working (or volunteering) as Fire / EMS responders.

It started with some details from a local news story that just simply, “hit me wrong”. After I posted about a local Volunteer Fire Chief (Billy Joe Carter), the situation kind of grew.

I found out things that I never would have imagined happening right here in my back yard …. I was shocked.

The most shocking thing I learned was how many convicted felons are running on crews here in Virginia. I couldn’t believe it.

What was more shocking was how many readers didn’t see a big issue with it. Some even wanted to categorize different levels of a felon!

I’m still confused as to what’s an acceptable felon?  I never knew there was a good and bad one. All I know is that I don’t want  a convicted felon working beside me nor do I want one responding to and entering my home.

Well, Botetourt County hired an Emergency Service’s Coordinator (I’ll post more on Carr Boyd from Charlotte, NC soon) and things have somewhat settled down (although they still haven’t resolved the felon issue). Now, all the drama seems to be headed Roanoke County’s way….

One of the local Volunteer Rescue Squads has an ex-porn star as a member.

Apparently, 29 year old Harmony Rose has left the Adult movie industry,  is  now living in Va. and aspiring to become a nurse. She has also joined the Cave Spring Volunteer Rescue Squad and some folks aren’t too happy about it.

Personally, I don’t see what all the fuss is about.

She has done nothing illegal …. being an adult movie actress (porn star) does not make you a convicted felon…. but wait …. even if it did, it’s apparently ok the be a convicted felon AND a firefighter/EMT here in Va.

Just out of high school, Harmony went to work at a Hooters restaurant in Florida.  After a while, she began dancing (stripping) at a Gentleman’s Club and from there moved into the Adult film industry. She  also worked some in the real estate business as a “side job”. By all appearances, she has been very successful.

Now, apparently; she has decided to move toward a nursing career and has chosen to start by volunteering with a local Rescue Squad …. a smart move by any aspiring nursing student.

Was the path she chose to get to this point in her life the most reputable??? In some minds….  maybe not. It’s not the path I would have wanted my daughters to have taken but I also understand why so many young women do. Who are we to judge?

Again, I don’t see what all the “fuss” is about. She’s a good looking, apparently intelligent woman. She has done nothing illegal and is working towards a new career. To my knowledge she has met all qualifications for membership. There is nothing on the application about previous employment or sexual taste /preference. She was not a member of the CSVRS at the time she made all the movies nor were any of them filmed with her in their uniform or while on their property.

Again I’ll say … what’s all the fuss about? What has she done wrong? A lot of the “hype” I’m hearing is around what some are calling a “morals and ethics issue”. Morals and ethics??? Who’s do we go by? Are ours all the same?

I understand that public servants are held to a “higher standard” but whos?

What standard are we talking about here anyway … having sex? Apparently she’s had a lot of practice and is very good at it so I’d say she far exceeds the average standard as it applies to sex…LOL

All kidding aside, sex is a natural act. Most of us do it. My parents did … obviously yours did too. Hell, Rhett even has 2 children so the odds are good that  he has at least twice in his life.

The rumor is that someone on the squad recognized her and began asking questions. How did they recognize her??? They’ve seen one of her movies…that’s how! So I guess the standards for making vs. simply watching an adult movie are different?

I guess what they’re saying is that  it’s ok to do it as long as you don’t talk about it? Hypocritical if ya ask me.

I think the reaction I’m hearing from some people could be stemmed more from insecurity and/or  jealousy rather than rational thought. I’m sure some of the wives / girlfriends of the male volunteers are not happy and most likely  feel threatened in one way or another.  If so, I wonder why they don’t feel the same way about other female members?

Do they not trust their husbands / boyfriends? Is that Harmony’s fault? If they are so worried, maybe they should just volunteer alongside their husband or boyfriend …. I’m sure Cave Spring could use the extra help.

Maybe the uproar is because Harmony is a good looking woman? Maybe they could create an “appearance standard” on their application and only allow us ugly folk to volunteer. Maybe it’s that they don’t want their husbands / boyfriends to see how other women can perform in the bedroom? None of which are reason enough to be discriminant towards her.

I wonder if we’d be hearing all this fuss is it were a male porn star in question?

There’s another problem with this story. I don’t understand why the Cave Spring Volunteer Rescue Squad or Roanoke County hasn’t gotten out in front of the story…. if it’s a “story” at all  (they should have Dave Statter and Rhett give em a class on how to handle these types of issues). I know that the Officers are aware of the situation and that they have been working to decide a how to handle it. It may be too late because the cat is out of the bag.

The “talk” is everywhere … firehouses, rescue squads, the medic room at the ER etc. Before long, the story will hit the main stream press and here in “The Bible Belt”, it will spread like wildfire. At the very least, someone like FireCritic.com or Ironfiremen.com will hear about it and put the story out. Why not be in “front” of the story rather than behind it?

If they are going to “kick her off” the squad…. do it NOW and justify the reasons (and they had better be good ones). If they elect to allow her to participate as a volunteer (as they should), stop the rumors cold by coming out and saying she meets all the requirements and there IS NO ISSUE.

If she responds to your home and you recognize her, it’s most likely because you’ve seen her films too. I’m sure she’s thankful for your purchase and personal contribution to her nursing school fund.

So what do you think?? Should she be allowed to volunteer or not? Should a previous career as an adult film star keep an applicant from volunteering while convicted felons are allowed? What other previous professions would disqualify an applicant? Are they listed on the application of your Department? I’m curious what you folks think.

I’ll stand behind her any day … I say allow her to volunteer!

Stay SAFE and in House!

I say she should be January through December in the Ironfiremen/Firecritic calendar. Maybe rhett and willie could pose in one month each.

  • Charlie

I took my Basic class with some Cave Springs folks. How strange. While I applaud her new career choice, I don’t feel she will ever be treated as a professional… anywhere. That will always loom over her past and ALL over the internet.

We booted a guy for driving to the station for months after he lost his license to a DUI. No one even knew. Ask to see people’s licenses when they join!

  • mitch

She’s obviously comitted to helping people…

  • Robert

I am a convicted felon I received my firefighter 2 rating while I was locked up. This changed my life, I am a decorated firefighter with several rescues to my credit. I have delivered babies and saved countless lives. I don’t believe I would be the man I am today if it had not been for me doing time and learning this trade. Where would these people be if I a convicted felon had not been there. We all deserve a second chance…

  • lance denotter

Depends of what kind of felony it was be it drugs guns crimes that hurt or killed
People I’d say hell no to it. But felonys like stuff that taxes, mortgage fraud money laundring with out drugs behind them type. White collar type crimes.

But sexual, drug, killing or attempted murder crimes no Damn way..

Ans the pornstar one who cares we all have sex in some way shape or form she just did it on film so if she does the job rightwwho cares and if you don’t like it live with it she did nothing wrong

  • Jeff

There is nothing wrong with a felon working some where no one is perfect tey just got cought now of they were murders or thieves that’s a different. Bust something light no big deal as long as they are straight now. An as far as a porn star who cares, so she had sex on film who hasn’t had sex at on point at a time. Stop being lame people grow up.

  • Bruce

ok so everyone has vented by now and i suppose ill throw my 2 cents in. Porn star on the dept? if she has the heart and willingness to serve. then so i say let the past disappear.

Now for the next, One thing is Felons are just that, they are in prison. ex felons have completed all the court system requirements to leave the prison. As far as their crimes? The only one I would have a problem with would be a child sex offender. But if you are in a MVA and your life is ebbing away and someone saved your life and you found out later he served time, would you be happy or sad you were still alive to be with your family? I think that we each should look inside and just realize that any person willing to put his or her life on the line as a volunteer for the community deserves a hand of gratitude. thanks to every firefighter for putting your life on the line everytime the tones go off.

  • Steve

I am completely disheartened by all the hypocrites here. There are people stating let her past be in the past and in the same breath damning the felon. Then there are those bellyaching about felons taking their jobs. Maybe they just out performed you and that’s why they were hired….try harder next time. How many people here have flawless pasts….and I don’t mean police record. I’m sure there are plenty of commenters who went to parties as kids and drank underage, smoked some pot, but they were never caught so there’s no record. Felons can rehabilitate, porn stars can change careers. What were the original charges? What were the circumstances? My personal view is, are you physically capable to perform the required tasks, do you have the intelligence to understand the task and think outside the box should a wrench get thrown in the mix, and does your personality allow you to work with others of a varying background, religion, creed, ethnicity, etc. If you really want to nit pick, the felon could probably relate to some patients more on a personal/social level getting them to open up more and allowing better patient care to occur, so who would be better serving the pt?? Just some perspective too, saying you’d “stand behind her”, if said porn star took that the wrong way and was unhappy or felt uneasy with the comment, you are now guilty of sexual harassment. Is it likely that situation would happen? No, but that’s the way the law is written. Give her a hug and she doesn’t want it; pat her butt after a good fire as a “good job”, that can now be sexual assault and now you are a felon too, just like the guys you don’t want to serve with!!!

I say let her be, well done to her for stepping up and being a part of the solution not the problem.

  • Robert Quate

In 2004 I was charged as a felon in Indiana. My offense? Possession of a POLICE SCANNER! As a vunteer FF in Va it never crossed my mind that I was felony material. So, I would suggest you confirm what is/is not a felony. How many of your readers would be charged with the same for something in Va is legal and expected in a Volunteers vehicle

  • Blake

I too say let her run. There are several things that went through my mind as I read this, most likely the officers will be able to count on her to not say anything about any of the calls she responds to. Which is a major problem in small town departments. As well as big cities Remember Some Atlanta firefighters got in trouble for posting a call on there personal Facebook pages

We all have had incidents the can be taken out of context and made to make us out as bad people. No one is perfect that walks this earth today.

  • Darin

Most firefighters are porn stars anyway, at least in their own minds!

  • Andy

I think it is perfectly fine for her to serve on an ambulance squad. I have run EMS and have been a firefighter for over 36 years. If most squads are like the ones I know, there is more hanky panky going on then ever went on in one of her movies. Those people are probably the ones doing most of the complaining. If she has any more issues, I know I would love to have her run with my fire dept. I am tired of looking at all of the butt ugly people we have (me included) lol.

  • Just Saying

Its not just in local fire houses or EMT stations there are people in the military that are being trained up to be deadly in close combat situations then coming home and training there “Brothers” to do the same in gangs through out the U.S… It makes me sick to know that a person can be that way and serve beside other people that may suffer the consequences of there “training” one day. We all need to get close to the 2nd amendment because this ride is not over yet. Just Saying…..

  • Bullets

You can not compare a history of crime to legal employment.

In Nj, you have to pass a background check to take the EMT course. DOH does the check. I dont know if the Fire guys have the same standards

  • Jimmy Jones

Not a fan of your comments Iron Fireman. How would you like it if your department wouldnt let you work because of your goofy mustache. I’ve held several jobs with both federal and municipal fire departments along with being a lifelong volunteer. Just because I made mistakes 20 years ago shouldn’t hold me back my entire life. As for the porn star, she should be afforded the same chances as anyone else. Since you are the Iron Firemen (who I once respected)it would probably be nice if you retract your statements!

    • http://www.Ironfiremen.com Iron Firemen

Sorry you dont approve Jimmy but Im standing my ground. Actually, Im not sure you know exactly where I stand on the issue either. We have members in Botetourt County with felony vehicular man slaughter convictions but they are still driving volunteer fire trucks etc. What if they hit and kill someone else??? I hope it never happens but what if? The family of the deceased would own the county. I cant believe they (the County would take that risk). Does this guy deserve another chance… maybe so. How about the child molester … how come this felony doesnt deserve that same 2nd chance? Or the the guy convicted of rape? Im not against these folks or them getting a second chance…. I dont want their second “slip up” being in my home … I’d guess you dont want it in yours either. As long as the jurisdiction HAS A POLICY, means to enforce it and the back bone to enforce and stand behind it …. I dont have a problem.

  • Joshua Smith

If she can do the job and do it effectively, then whats the issue? We all have pasts and it shouldnt matter to the fire dept what it is. I feel that we shouldnt have filters when it comes to someones work history when its a volunteer dept/ Part-paid. I dont know about all you guys and gals out there but I am on a part paid dept and we still have a hard time getting people to show up during the day and most weekends. She should be treated the same as any other member of the dept. The convicted felon aspect I feel that who ever is convicted of a crime and serves there time has paid there dept to society, and should be allowed to volunteer if they so wish, lets not condemn these people for wanting to give back to there community. I agree with some of the other comments on here I to would have a hard time working with a sex offender, but put them in positions where they will have contact with children for long periods of time. Good Luck and Stay safe.

    • Joshua Smith

Dont put them in positions where they will have contact with children for long perriods of time.

As a retired firemedic, I think felons should NOT be allowed to volunteer. They are prone to stealing and since they are allowed in our homes, our purses and our wallets, sorry guys but go volunteer somewhere else. This is totally an opportunistic thing for them. I also worked at an ER and we hired a paramedic from another state (they didn’t check out his story, but WE connected the dots and found out he was a convict) who would steal wallets when he transported trauma patients to their rooms, among other things.

  • Ridin

What everyone has to sit back and ask their selves is, would I want ths convicted felon wandering through my house, alone, checking on an alarm? Or how would you feel having a prior molester or rapist cutting the clothes off of your 10 year old daughter or son? Sure times are tough for volunteers, but holy shit where do you draw the line between professional, honer, trustworthy, and letting someone slide thru because you need “numbers” on the board. The days of good ole boy redneck fire depts. are fading. There are too many opportunities for someone to slip up and have the whole fire dept./town sued or worse, not trusted.
As for the porn star, I think it’s not socially accepted, but that is something she’ll have to put up with as far as the talking and harassment that WILL happen.

  • BH

Countless businesses now do pre-employment credit scores because statistically poor credit increases one’s propensity for theft. Firefighters and EMTs are able to enter people’s homes at any time, often unsupervised. Why would ANY company want the liability of a known felon having that kind of access to people’s property and personal information?

Think of it this way- how would it look on the 11 o’clock news for your company/station/department to be mentioned in the same sentence as any manner of misdeeds committed by a known convicted felon?

  • RJ(in florida)

This subject remeinds me of the saying, “let he who is without sin cast the first stone”.

i was at a seminar where i was told that you should allways carry a stone in your pocket because when someone says that, its a ploy to get out of a tight moral situation by deflection of saying,”you have sined too”…so i throw the stone and when they ask, you are without sin?

    sure…i am without “YOUR” sin

my point is she committed no crime so there is no issue and unless the scarlet letter placers have NEVER looked at a sexy ad, worn sliky underwear or EVER LOOKED AT ANYTHING COMMING CLOSE TO BEING PORN…then and only then can they judge.

as for felons that should be looked at on a case by case because certain criminals cannot ever be trusted again

  • Chad

I would rather work next to her than a druggie or kid toucher. If a spouse/girlfriend has a problem with their spouse/boyfriend working with her, their problems run much deeper than they are willing to admit. (also, the problem is theirs!)

I enjoy passing on my knowledge to people who are serious about the profession and would welcome her on my bus anyday!

  • Kristy

So she is a slut… So what, worlds full of them MALE and FEMALE. As long as she aint banging by husband then its not my concern. If they kicked all of the male horndogs off the fire department/EMS then you better hope your house don’t catch on fire, or you don’t have an accident because you are going to be screwed. Could be worse she could be selling drugs.. TO YOUR KIDS! To sum it up there is only one true judge and you/I are not it.

  • Sherry Boone

OK Willie, maybe it’s a girl thing but I am left wanting to know more. I have to say while I found your reporting informative as always I’m concerned because I feel it assisted in creating more buzz for “Harmony” without much factual information except exposing her previous work and stating the obvious that it has created drama within the EMS community. Can we expect an interview anytime in the near future to allow her to tell her side of this story? I’m left wondering how she feels about all the buzz? Is she experiencing difficulties or is everyone nice to her while talking behind her back? How is she handling the insecure wives/girlfriends? What has her interested in a career change from the adult industry to healthcare?

I must say as a nurse for the past 8 years and a former Fire/EMS volunteer I can think of far worse things for people to have in their past. Her previous work is impressive and I applaud her for using her assets to provide for herself even more so for choosing healthcare as her next adventure. I wish her the best in her new career choices and only hope that she be treated with respect as she continues to provide care to the citizens of Roanoke County. As for the insecure wives and girlfriends can you really think your men have that much to offer her? Come on trust that your men will look, they will check out her previous work, but seriously give the girl a chance. So come on ironfireman … get an interview and really tell her story!

As a firefigher’s wife I say let her have her EMT/nursing career! At least she hasn’t drawn a gun on a police officer! And in reguards to the felons, I’m sorry but I don’t want a felon coming into my home even if it is a resque call, sorry Robert and Jimmy! But if you allow one that opens the door to the repeat offenders. And has been proven by the embezzlement and other similar crimes being commited by officers of volunteer departments, that’s something these departments don’t need! Most of the rual volunteer departments work hard at fund raising events to earn most of the money they have. I know I work right beside my husband (serving in the concession stand, ect.) for most of these events to support him and his brothers. The last thing I want to see is some felon coming along and embezzling the money these guys have worked so hard for. If there’s a way to let them be firefighters without holding any office in the department, then maybe that would be ok. But they don’t deserve the right to manage money, equipment or anything like that. They gave up that right when they committed the felony. As per Harmony, I say let her go for it and support her all the way!
