Less than a minute after removing the victim, the car became heavily involved in fire and was soon fully involved. Without a doubt, Firefighter McKinney's actions along that roadside saved a life!

Shortly after his size up, Captain Perdue transmitted that he had multiple victims hanging out of windows (of the upper floors) and the hallway / stairwell heavily involved with fire.

The Roanoke Fire / EMS Department runs with 3 members on an Engine and 3 on a Ladder (this includes the Chauffeur and Officer). This fire is just another example of their members doing extraordinary things under the worst of circumstances.

If we put the fire out, there will be nothing to "flash". If the fire is extinguished, it can not weaken or burn through lightweight trusses / construction. When a fire is no longer burning, it can no longer produce the toxic gas and fumes that kill trapped occupants.

My heart rate went from 60 to 180 .... I wasn't expecting to "work" ... I SHOULD HAVE BEEN!

Blogging is one thing but members all across this Country are honoring these men in the same way.... by getting back on the truck! Police Officers are on duty tonight on the Va. Tech Campus. Brothers of IAFF L-1009 are staffing the rigs in Worcester, Ma. and the Mount Vernon (NY) Fire department stands ready to take in the next call.

Reports say a candle and Christmas tree are to blame for a fire on the 8th floor. See the video below for the Austin news coverage..
