Many still have the "old school" mentality in believing that we sit around all day, playing cards, grab ass or taking naps. They have no idea how many hours of training it takes to maintain our certifications, health and physical abilities.

I can't describe the feeling in your gut as you're crawling down that dark, hot hallway. So dark that you can't see the lens of your face piece and so hot that your bottle is hot enough to heat the air you try to breath. I can't tell you why it is that we keep pushing / going but we do.

It was a good class that contained a lot of things that needed to be said. I'd bet every Department has a member or two that you wouldn't want in front of or behind you on the line.... am I right?

The Fire Critic (Rhett Fleitz), Andrew Catron (The Model City Firefighter) and I just attended the South Atlantic Fire Rescue Expo in Raleigh, NC.... WE HAD A BLAST!

My comfort (if there was any) was in thinking that at least we were able to give a mom and dad a little time with their child. I didn't even know their names back then. I didn't want to. Dean Russell, the Captain from #4 C-shift; did a GREAT job of "controlling the door" until we could make the connection and get the attack line in position. His efforts held the fire to a single apartment.
