The members ended up "hand jacking" several hundred feet of 5" supply line off the Interstate and through adjoining yards to reach neighborhood hydrants. They were thinking "outside the box" and got the job done!

My comfort (if there was any) was in thinking that at least we were able to give a mom and dad a little time with their child. I didn't even know their names back then. I didn't want to. I didn't want to attach names with faces or images inside my head. I didn't want to think about if she lived or not. Did she make it? Did we do everything we could have?

Dean Russell, the Captain from #4 C-shift; did a GREAT job of "controlling the door" until we could make the connection and get the attack line in position. His efforts held the fire to a single apartment.

For us, it's always been about promoting the Fire Service as a whole as well as "The Brotherhood". We share the stories that explain why this is the best damn job in the world!

Again... NOT something that many of the Brothers and Sisters in attendance get to do on a regular basis. This was a unique opportunity for many of them and it was provided by Valley Of The FOOLS!

Less than a minute after removing the victim, the car became heavily involved in fire and was soon fully involved. Without a doubt, Firefighter McKinney's actions along that roadside saved a life!

Shortly after his size up, Captain Perdue transmitted that he had multiple victims hanging out of windows (of the upper floors) and the hallway / stairwell heavily involved with fire.

The Roanoke Fire / EMS Department runs with 3 members on an Engine and 3 on a Ladder (this includes the Chauffeur and Officer). This fire is just another example of their members doing extraordinary things under the worst of circumstances.
